New contract makes it simpler for Harbaugh to go away for NFL?

Almost instantly after the Michigan Wolverines confirmed on Wednesday that head coach Jim Harbaugh had signed a “reworked” contract that now runs by means of the 2026 season, some puzzled if the settlement carried a buyout that would permit him to return to the NFL after he closely flirted with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this winter.

It seems that is the case.

ESPN’s Heather Dinich reviews Harbaugh will earn a base wage of $7.05 million for the upcoming marketing campaign and will make as much as $7.6 million for the 2026 season if he stays with the college on the deal by means of its expiration. However, Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News notes the contract incorporates comparatively cheap buyout clauses that shrink with every year.
